A Moroccan Parliamentary delegation took part, February 17-18th in New York, in the IPU-UN Parliamentary Hearing on “Education as a Key to Peace and Sustainable Development: Toward the Implementation of Fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG4).”
The Moroccan delegation included Deputy Hayat Bouffarrachen, Group of Authenticity and Modernity; Deputy Noureddine Lazrek, Group of Constitutional Rally; Deputy Ahmed Toumi, Istiqlali Group for Unity and Egalitarianism; Councilor Ahmed Touizi, Board member at the House of Councilors; Councilor Mohamed Salem Benmassaoud, Istiqlali Group for Unity and Egalitarianism.
This major parliamentary event witnessed the participation of members of world parliamentary sections under the IPU, experts from UNESCO and UNICEF, diplomats, and representatives of civil society.
Besides, the Hearing was part of UN-IPU efforts to bring positions together and to call for greater political resolve to ensure that the sustainable development goal on education is fully realized by 2030. The Hearing considered education a necessary precondition for sustainable development in all its economic, social, and environmental dimensions and educated people the basis of democracy, peace, and prosperity.
The agenda of the Hearing, of a two-day duration, included discussing many principal axes relating to education and its role in achieving sustainable development. The Hearing focused on sharing best practices and shedding light on setbacks of education on the international, regional, and local levels to secure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The topics discussed were:
- Education for peace and democracy: Building the bonds of active citizenship,
- Education as a key instrument to empower women and girls,
- Securing decent work for all through lifelong learning, training and vocational education,
- The Fourth Industrial revolution: What does it portend for educational systems?
- Protecting our planet for future generations through education,
- Strengthening public funding for better outcomes in education.
This parliamentary hearing was an opportunity for the Moroccan delegation to highlight the Kingdom’s orientation and efforts to implement a strategic, comprehensive, and integrative vision to reform our country’s educational system. That is through working on materializing the principles of reviving educational quality for all, equity, and equality of opportunities, advancing individuals and society, renouncing negative behaviors, consolidating the values of citizenship, democracy, and dialogue, and disseminating a human rights culture.
