A parliamentary delegation is taking part in the work of the Global Parliamentary Conference on Migration, co-organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, on the theme "Parliaments and the Global Compacts on Migration and Refugees: How to Bring About Stronger International Cooperation and National Implementation?”, held on 20-21June 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey.
The parliamentary delegation comprises:
The sessions of this High-level Conference aim to evaluate the progress made in implementing international compacts on migration, identify the challenges facing ad-hoc actions at the bilateral, national, and international levels, examine good practices, and determine new concrete measures to address irregular migration.
In this vein, the Moroccan parliamentary delegation has distinguished itself by a high-profile presence in all sessions of this conference. In his address, Rep. Ahmed Touizi stressed that international cooperation and the development of coordinated and consistent strategies are essential for a comprehensive approach to managing migration. To that end, parliamentary cooperation must be strengthened with a view to making strategies work, sharing best practices, and implementing the requirements of multilateral mechanisms and partnerships with other stakeholders, including civil society and international organizations, with a view to achieving and implementing the objectives and imperatives of the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
In connection with this topic, Rep. Touizi noted that Morocco had adopted a wise and ground-breaking migration policy, which takes into account the fundamental human rights principles ratified by Morocco and its commitment to approaching this issue in a spirit of humanity, respect for human rights, and cooperation with neighboring countries.
For his part, Cllr. Kamal Ait Mik stressed the need for a collective commitment to implementing the good practices of migration policy in line with the Marrakech Global Compact on Migration in a way that contributes to the regularization of migrants’ legal, social and humanitarian situations, intending to eradicate systematic hate speech against them, as well as enhancing cooperation and solidarity between North-South and South-South countries in the field of migration management.
In the same context, Rep. Khdouj Slassi underlined the need for tangible international solidarity to adopt a prescient approach to the phenomenon of migration in light of future crises linked to climate change. In this regard, she highlighted the changes in the motives of migration, bearing in mind that the youth nowadays migrate to seek the credibility of institutions.
For his part, Rep. Mustapha Reddad stated that Morocco spares no effort in combating irregular migration by dismantling illegal migration networks and disrupting attempts of irregular migration. He also shed light on the National Strategy for Migration and Asylum, which falls within the framework of the continuation of the structured procedures in migration and asylum adopted in September 2013. In the same context, Rep. Reddad stressed that the development of this strategy required a participatory approach based on diagnosing the migration issue and learning from the leading and successful international experiences in this field.
It should be noted that the Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) co-organized a parliamentary conference on the same theme on December 6-7, 2018, at the seat of the Parliament in Rabat, as part of the parliamentary follow-up of the International Conference on Migration, held in Marrakech on December 10-11, 2018, for the purpose of implementing the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
