A delegation of the Moroccan Parliament took part, on Sunday, November 13, 2022, in the parliamentary meeting organized as part of the 27th Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), in partnership between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Egyptian House of Representatives, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
The delegation comprised:
- Rep. Khadija Zoumi, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Head of the delegation;
- Rep. Khdouj Slassi, from the Socialist Group;
- Cllr. Kamal Ait Mik, from the Group of the National Rally of Independents;
- Cllr. Hassan Chamis, from the Group of Authenticity and Modernity.
The meeting gathers parliamentarians from all over the world to address the main climate issues, including limiting greenhouse gas emissions, intensifying adaptation efforts, and mobilizing climate funding in favor of developing countries that are in the front line of the war against climate change. The meeting also serves as a platform that facilitates dialogue on the climate crisis within the global parliamentary community in order to define joint parliamentary solutions for a more sustainable world.
In the address of Rep. Zoumi during this parliamentary meeting, the Deputy Speaker of the House highlighted the policy of the Kingdom of Morocco in curbing the impacts of climate change and its engagement in the global endeavor towards climate justice.
Rep. Zoumi also shed light on the contribution of the House of Representatives to the environmental cause through legislation and parliamentary diplomacy. She also noted the practical measures taken by the House to limit the environmental impact of climate imbalances by adopting renewable energy sources and eco-friendly devices of the new generation.
For his part, Cllr. Kamal Ait Mik recalled the climate imbalances the world is going through and their impacts, namely the disruption of supply circuits of fossil energies, oil products, and natural gas. In the same respect, he urged the participants to work towards the effective implementation of a strategy to produce carbon-free energy and accelerate the development of renewable energies in order to achieve carbon neutrality.
It should be noted that the annual Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) is the largest global gathering on climate change as it includes world leaders, legislators, scientists, and civil society, in a platform aiming to find joint solutions to consolidate climate action.
