The Inter-Parliamentary Union holds its 142nd Assembly in a virtual session on May 24-28, 2021, on the overall theme of “Overcoming the pandemic today and building a better tomorrow: the role of parliaments.” The Assembly witnesses the important participation of representatives of different parliaments of the world.
After approving the agenda, the first day started with virtual sessions of the Governing Council, where the IPU President Duarte Pacheco presented a report on the activities of the Union and the Executive Committee. On the same day, six members were elected to the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, and two members were elected to the Committee on Middle East Questions.
The Union carried on its works on the second day, announcing the launch of the IPU Cremer-Passy Prize. Later, the standing committees and other bodies of the Union pursued their works, mainly the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the IPU, the Committee on Middle East Questions, and the Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law.
Rep. Hayat Boufarrachen represented the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco in the meeting of the IPU Governing Council held on May 24-25. The 142nd Assembly in the next days will discuss prominent questions, mainly the role of parliaments in overcoming the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the parliamentary strategies to strengthen peace and security against threats and conflicts resulting from climate-related disasters and their consequences, and mainstreaming digitalization and the circular economy to achieve the SDGs.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union gathers 179 Member Parliaments and 13 Associate Members. Its mission is to protect world democracy and work on its construction through political dialogue and concrete steps. The Union works closely with the United Nations and other organizations with whom it shares the same goals.
