During her participation in the African Union’s Reflection Forum on the Unconstitutional Changes of Governments in Africa, held in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, the Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs and Moroccans Expatriates Committee of the House of Representatives, Rep. Nadia Bouaida, gave an address on Thursday, March 17, 2022. In her address, the Representative stressed that the Parliament is one of the most important institutional mechanisms to be mobilized in the strategy to curb unconstitutional changes of governments. About this matter, she noted that this phenomenon represents a serious concern to all African parliamentarians, as it directly affects the democratic practice.
In addition, Rep. Bouaida noted that institutional tradition in Morocco has been consolidated over centuries, helping the country to endure and overcome tough moments in a smooth and steady manner. She further added, "Our country is keen to contribute to the stability of our African continent and commits to participate in addressing all arising challenges."
Rep. Bouaida stressed that the spirit of solidarity that must characterize joint African action requires, in terms of moral and historical obligations, a response to the aspirations and expectations of all Africans, young and old, rich and poor.
Besides, she stated, "As parliamentarians, we firmly believe in the democratic choice that we have persuasively shared with the peoples we represent. We are the first ones to react when our modern democracies confront this phenomenon, which is not only limited to Africa, but also to long-standing democracies that, too, witness some institutional crises."
Rep. Bouaida also emphasized that the creation of synergies helps in maintaining constitutional order in African countries, which should remain in constant readiness to confront difficult moments. In addition, she pointed out that parliamentarians, who are always at the front line, can play key roles in democratic transition and renewal processes, if the required conditions are met.
Rep. Nadia Bouaida concluded her address by noting that the Parliament represents a school of citizenship, noting that the Children's Parliament should be utilized as a mechanism to keep pace with the aspirations of the future representatives of peoples.
