Speakers of Moroccan House of Representatives and Belgian Chamber of Representatives Agree to Give New Impetus to Parliamentary Cooperation

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Rachid Talbi El Alami held talks, on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the House, with the Speaker of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, Hon. Eliane Tillieux, who took part earlier that day in the Inaugural Ceremony of the Institutional Twinning Project linking the House of Representatives to several European Parliaments.

The meeting was an occasion where both parties commended the distinguished and historical ties linking the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Belgium on all levels. In the same respect, they specifically commended the friendship and cooperation bonds between the legislative institutions of the two countries.

Besides, the Speaker of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives noted that the exchange of experiences and sharing of parliamentary practices contributes to advancing the action of legislative institutions.

In the same context, she shed light on the experience of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in practicing parliamentary missions using several languages, the roles to promote the presence of women in positions of power and elected bodies, and the peculiarities of the legislative and control action of the Belgian Parliament. For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives shed light on several common features between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Belgium.

Additionally, he noted that the House of Representatives remains keen to implement the official nature of Amazighe in all its works and looks forwards to learning from the Belgian parliamentary experience in consolidating multilingualism.

The Speaker also expressed the strong will of the House of Representatives to contribute to advancing the full participation of Moroccan women in all areas, according to the directives set by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in his speech on the Throne Day of this year.

The two parties also discussed several themes and questions related to parliamentary action, especially concerning its amelioration, the formation of the legislative institutions of the two countries and their prerogatives, and the importance of the Institutional Twinning Project launched. The two Speakers later agreed to give new impetus to cooperation between the Moroccan House of Representatives and Belgian Chamber of Representatives.

It should be noted that Friday, September 23, 2022, witnessed the launch of the Institutional Twinning Project linking the Moroccan House of Representatives, French National Assembly, Czech Chamber of Deputies, Belgian Chamber of Representatives, and supported by the legislative institutions of four countries, namely Italy, Greece, Hungary and Portugal, and financed by the European Union.
