Speakers of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors, Hon. Rachid Talbi El Alami and Hon. Ennam Mayara received the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Hon. Duarte Pacheco, and the Secretary-General of the Union, Mr. Martin Chungong, on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue: Working Together for Our Common Future," organized by the Moroccan Parliament and the IPU in Marrakesh on June 13-15, 2023.
On occasion, the President and the Secretary-General of the IPU commended the Royal Message addressed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God glorify him, to the participants in the Conference. In his message, His Majesty emphasized "the need to set a joint mechanism, to be coordinated by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, whose mission would be to make interfaith dialogue a common, lofty goal for the entire international community. That goal should be defended in international forums and considered one of the key principles of democratic governance in parliamentary practice, as well as an indicator of respect for pluralism and cultural diversity."
In this regard, the IPU's President and Secretary-General stressed the high importance of creating a special mechanism for interfaith dialogue amongst the organs of the IPU. The instrument can take the form of a Committee within the Union. Besides, they noted the readiness of the Inter-Parliamentary Union to follow up on the proposals presented in this regard, especially given that the Union will be amending its Statutes.
The IPU's President and Secretary-General thanked the Kingdom of Morocco and the Moroccan Parliament for the success and good organization of this Conference, which is the first-ever global parliamentary Conference that gathers parliamentarians, religious leaders, politicians, civil society, researchers, and experts to discuss interfaith dialogue.
