Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki takes part in the activities of the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on August 19-20th in the Republic of Austria via videoconference.
At the opening session, the participants in the conference listened to the addresses of President of Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas Barrón and Secretary-General of United Nations Antonio Guterres.
The parliamentary summit will tackle numerous issues, including “Stepping up Parliamentary Action to Find Urgent Solutions to Climate Change Issues;” “Human Mobility in Pursuit of a Better Life: Challenges, Opportunities, and Solutions;” “Improving Governance by Bridging the Gap Between Parliaments and the People;” “Forging Inclusive and Sustainable Economies that Deliver Well-being and Justice for All;” and “Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism: The Perspective of Victims.”
During this conference, several reports will be presented. The reports mainly tackle the “2030 Sustainable Development Goals;” “Stepping up Youth Participation in Politics and Parliaments;” “Making Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls a Reality: Reviewing Best Practices;” “Democracy and Parliaments;” and “Science, Technology, and Ethics: Emerging Challenges and Urgent Solutions.”
At this conference, Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki made an intervention on “Mobilizing Parliaments for more Effective Multilateral Relations that Ensure Peace and Sustainable Development for Peoples and the World.” In his address, Mr. El Malki recalled the critical and peculiar period that countries are undergoing due to Covid-19, which obliges world parliamentarians and parliaments to contribute actively to the collective effort to address the repercussions of this pandemic.
Also, Mr. Habib El Malki recalled the central role of the Kingdom of Morocco in consolidating regional solidarity with African countries and its translation into practical policies. In this respect, he highlighted to the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to African Heads of State to fight Covid-19 in the Continent, and His Majesty’s action to provide fifteen African countries with the assistance that includes preventive medical equipment to support their efforts in combatting the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives also stressed that the growing positive cooperation between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations embodies the global vision that should govern global affairs' strategic management. Besides, he commended the contribution of Parliaments to work towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, especially since they are based on the principles of the United Nations Charter, and that the UN is the cornerstone of effective global action.
