Speaker of the House of Representatives Rachid Talbi El Alami received on Friday, May 13, 2022, at the House, the President of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW), Mr. Edgar Corzo Sosa, and his entourage, composed of members of the Committee and its secretariat.
At the outset of the meeting, Mr. Rachid Talbi El Alami welcomed Mr. Edgar Corzo Sosa and his entourage, expressing his esteem for this meeting, which is an opportunity to discuss several questions relating to migration, asylum, the Moroccan approach to address the two questions, and the gains obtained so far thanks to said approach. On the same occasion, the Speaker of the House of Representatives shed light on the role of the legislative institution in the protection of the rights of migrants and their families at the levels of legislation, control, and evaluation of public policies, in addition to the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting and protecting the rights of migrant workers.
For his part, the President of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW), Mr. Edgar Corzo Sosa and his entourage thanked the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the warm reception. In the same context, Mr. Corzo Sosa lauded the achievements of the Kingdom of Morocco on various levels, focusing particularly on the Moroccan approach to address the questions of migration and asylum, which has permitted the resolution of several cases of migrants and the protection of their social, economic, educational and health rights, and the ones of their families. The UN CMW President and members also highlighted the role of parliaments on the national, regional and international levels in the areas of legislation, adaptation of national laws, control of government action, and protection of the rights of Moroccan migrants and their families in the host and residence countries.
In his talks with the President and the delegation of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families, the Speaker of the House of Representatives highlighted the Moroccan approach in the areas of migration and asylum, focusing on the legal, administrative, social, health, and educational gains achieved by the migrants and their families in the Kingdom of Morocco, which is no longer a transit country but a country of residence and settlement for several migrants. In this context, he mentioned the approach adopted by the Kingdom of Morocco in dealing with migrants during the COVID-19, as they benefitted from the vaccine without any discrimination. The Speaker of the House of Representatives also mentioned the laws that protect migrants and grant them and their families several economic, social, health and educational rights, stressing that the House of Representatives follows this dynamic through legislation and control of government action.
The reception by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Rachid Talbi El Alami, of the President of the UN Committee on the Protection of the rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families, Mr. Edgar Corzo Sosa, and his entourage, was also an opportunity to discuss and exchange views on several regional and international migration and asylum questions. The two parties also discussed the joint responsibility of legislative institutions in protection and control through coordination, communication and international parliamentary consultation.
