Speaker of the House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alami confirmed on Thursday, November 25, 2021, in Madrid, that the Kingdom of Morocco is always committed to participating actively in the preparatory meetings of the regional parliamentary groups, considering the importance the Kingdom gives to its ties with its brotherly and friendly countries.
The Speaker of the House took part alongside Speaker of the House of Councilors Naam Miyara in the meetings of the Arab and African Geopolitical Groups ahead of the IPU’s 143rd Assembly, held in Madrid on November 26-30. In this respect, he noted that these meetings enabled the elaboration of a road map on the participation of Arab and African countries in this international parliamentary event. He also highlighted that the main goal is to defend the higher interests of the Kingdom of Morocco within international fora.
The meetings were also an opportunity for Arab and African countries to coordinate positions and discuss the agenda of this international gathering. In addition to the urgent issues, the participants tackled some questions of organizational nature, including the choice of candidates from the two groups to fill vacant positions in the standing committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. In this respect, the Kingdom of Morocco has earned the trust of the Arab Geopolitical Group again to be its representative within the Committee on Peace and International Security.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union, created 130 years ago, intends to consolidate cooperation and dialogue between all nations. The Union currently gathers 179 Member Parliaments and 13 regional parliamentary organizations. It works on giving a parliamentary dimension to international governance, including the works of the United Nations. It also focuses on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
