Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States Condemns Resolution of the European Parliament against the Kingdom of Morocco and Elects Moroccan Parliament into the Executive Committee

The effective participation of the Moroccan parliamentary delegation in the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC), held in Algiers, Algeria, on January 26-30, 2023, culminated in the election of the Moroccan Parliament as a member of the Union’s Executive Committee. The distinguished Moroccan participation, in continuation of the successes of the Moroccan parliamentary diplomacy, and thanks to the bilateral meetings with the Parliaments of brotherly and friendly countries, also culminated in the issuance by the PUIC of a condemnation of the latest resolution of the European Parliament against the Kingdom of Morocco, and a rejection of its flagrant interposition in the internal affairs of Islamic States, foremost among which is the Kingdom of Morocco.

On another note, the Moroccan parliamentary delegation addressed a letter of protest to the Secretary General of the Union against the incident that occurred during the opening session of the Conference, and the attempt to undermine the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and meddle in the internal affairs of a Muslim country member of the PUIC by the representative of a parliamentary organization that does not belong to the Union.

In this respect, the Head of the Moroccan delegation and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Mohamed Ouzzine, noted that the invitation of Gloria Flórez from the Andean Parliament by the host country to attend the Opening Session does in no way entitle her to address matters that do not fall under the prerogatives of the organization, or to raise controversial questions that would jeopardize the spirit of consensus marking the joint Islamic action. On the same note, he added that such transgressions are a blatant violation of the objectives and principles based on which the Union was founded. Moreover, Mr. Ouzzine underscored that such practices cannot be tolerated or pass unanswered, stressing the categorical rejection by the Moroccan parliamentary delegation of the incident and the speech of the said representative. The Deputy Speaker of the House also called the Secretariat General to retract the content of the speech from the reports and documents of the PUIC, and to ensure that such an incident would not occur again.

It should be noted that the Moroccan parliamentary delegation includes, alongside the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Mohamed Ouzzine, the members of the Moroccan representation at the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC):

-       Rep. Mohamed Chebbak (Group of the National Rally of Independents),

-       Rep. Najoua Koukouss (Group of Authenticity and Modernity),

-       Rep. Khalid Chennak (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism),

-       Cllr. Abdelkrim Chahid (Coordinator of the Constitutional, Democratic, and Social Group),

-       Cllr. Khalid Essati (Group of the National Labor Union of Morocco).
