A high-level delegation of the Moroccan Parliament is taking part in the 2024 Annual Parliamentary Hearing on the theme: “Putting an end to conflicts: Prescriptions for a peaceful future,” organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in partnership with the United Nations on February 8-9, 2024, at the UN Headquarters in New York – the United States.
The delegation comprises Rep. Mustapha Reddad (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Omar Hejira (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism), Rep. Khaddouj Slassi (Socialist Group – Ittihadi Opposition), and Cllr. Kamal Aït Mik (Group of the National Rally of Independents).
The theme of the IPU-UN hearing focuses on peace, which is one of the top priorities of the current presidents of the General Assembly of the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Spread over two days; the Hearing will enable the participants to discuss and exchange views and best practices on several timely questions, with the participation of experts and officials of the United Nations, diplomatic representatives, as well as renowned researchers and academics specializing in international conflict resolution. Among others, the participants will discuss the following themes:
- The Future of Peace and Security: From good intentions to a renewed collective action;
- Might is not right: International law vs. the law of the jungle;
- “Security” redefined: from State-centric approach to a “new security paradigm” based on Human Security;”
- Lowering the temperature: Climate change and conflict;
- Parliamentary diplomacy for peace: Good practices and common challenges;
- Emerging threats to peace: Technology for evil vs. human progress.
It should be noted that the Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the UN takes place in close cooperation with the various UN bodies. Its importance lies in its contribution to elaborating whitepapers on the questions under discussion and the affirmation of the parliamentary aspect of these in order to assist parliamentarians in better understanding decision-making processes at the United Nations and provide their analyses to the UN member States according to their local and national experiences.
