Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Nadia Touhami, together with Rep. Hamid Noughou, the Chairperson of the Social Sectors Committee, took part, via videoconference, in the 4th Regional Review Conference of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, organized on June 1-2, 2022, by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Regional Bureau of Arab Countries of the United Nations Population Fund, with the presence of regional and international experts.
The speakers made several presentations on the progress made in the empowerment and protection of older persons since the last review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in 2017. They also highlighted the challenges faced by the mechanisms for implementing the Plan and shared its success motives, current priorities, the lessons learned, as well as the main findings and messages of the parliamentary dialogue in which the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Nadia Touhami, and Rep. Hamid Noughou took part on May 19, 2022.
In parallel with the presentations, the Conference sheds light on several issues related to ageing and older persons. In this regard, participants will discuss topics linked to social protection, health insurance, development of the economy related to long-term care, integration of aging policies, and acceleration of the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging in the Arab region.
It should be noted that the World Assembly on Ageing, under the auspices of the United Nations, adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in 2002, with the aim of building a society that is inclusive of all ages.
The Action Plan is subject to review every five years in order to assess the progress made and monitor the situation of older persons.
