The House of Representatives hosted the fourteenth meeting of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable development (COMPSUD) on December 17th, 2019, with the participation of parliamentarians and experts from the Mediterranean.
The meeting, opened by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Habib El Malki, discussed essential topics relating to the priorities of sustainable development and the environment in the Mediterranean. It also dealt with efficient solutions to face climate change in humid coastal regions.
The meeting is of particular importance as the Mediterranean Sea, with a coastline of 46,000 Km, is the largest basin in the world and encloses the largest humid coasts and faces severe threats resulting from climate change, which can have consequences on the region’s development and populations.
The meeting concluded its activities with the adoption of the Rabat Declaration, which called for strengthening good governance in favor of promoting a green economy, in addition to promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at all education levels. The declaration also expressed the concern of the Organization regarding the increasing flows of migrants and refugees to Mediterranean countries and called the competent regional and international institutions for action to ensure peace, solidarity, stability, and sovereignty of these countries.
It is worth mentioning that the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (COMPSUD) was instituted in 2002 during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg at the initiative of the MIO-ECSDE and the Global Water Partnership.
