A high-level international conference on the support to victims of terrorism and the fight against extremism kicked off on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, in Rome, with the participation of the Kingdom of Morocco.
The Moroccan delegation to this two-day international meeting, organized by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), is led by the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Mohamed Sabbari.
Speaking on the occasion, Rep. Sabbari highlighted the successful experience of the Kingdom in this area. In the same respect, he also called for further joint and multilateral action at the regional and international levels to address global terrorist threats.
The Deputy Speaker of the House added that Morocco, which attaches great importance to security issues, has adopted a proactive policy against terrorism, reflected in the adoption of several measures and legal texts, including Law 03.03 and Law 86.14, in addition to the establishment of effective bodies specializing in this field.
Besides, Mr. Sabbari highlighted that the strategy adopted by the Kingdom, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is based on a comprehensive and integrated vision combining different components. It also relies on other internal mechanisms that have strengthened the country's ability to cope with the dangers represented by terrorist groups. He also noted that the victims of the terrorist attacks of May 16, 2003, benefitted from legal and royal assistance and the support of all the components of Moroccan society.
Later, the Deputy Speaker underscored the great esteem the Kingdom of Morocco enjoys within the international arena, noting that it has established a "unique" program called "Moussalaha" (Reconciliation), which aims to supervise the prisoners involved in cases of extremism and terrorism and rehabilitate them on the psychological and intellectual levels so that they are capable of integrating and interacting positively with the components and institutions of society.
Held in collaboration with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the African Parliamentary Union (APU), and the Shura Council of Qatar, this High-Level Conference follows the launch of the United Nations Model Legislative Provisions to Support and Protect the Rights and Needs of Victims of Terrorism, last January.
The event, which features the participation of Speakers of Parliaments from several Mediterranean, African and Arab countries, aims to provide a parliamentary contribution to the global efforts to combat terrorism and prevent violent extremism through vigorous intervention and a real impact on societies that are victims of terrorism.
