Deputy Hayat Bouffarachen Represents Moroccan House of Representatives in Meeting of Inter-Parliamentary Union

Deputy Hayat Bouffarachen represented the Moroccan House of Representatives in the 65th meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UN Women on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, via videoconference, and tackled the question of "Parity in Politics in the Post-Covid 19 World."

The statement of the Deputy focused on the imbalances revealed by the pandemic in the situation of Moroccan women, which pushed the Moroccan State to intervene in order to alleviate the psychological and material repercussions of the pandemic that emanated from imposing the lockdown.

Ms. Boufarrachen tackled the key role that women play, focusing on the health sector. In this respect, she stated that "Moroccan women have shown an outstanding professional and humanitarian spirit that enabled Morocco to overcome the critical stages of the pandemic and contributed to the effective management of the vaccination campaign." The deputy called for "honoring Moroccan women for their efforts towards both family and society." She added that "the appointment by His Majesty the King of a woman to the Presidency of the Court of Accounts is a tribute to Moroccan women who now occupy senior positions in national institutions."

Ms. Bouffarachen concluded her statement by highlighting “the augmentation of women's representation in legislative positions, as they now occupy 90 seats in the House of Representatives, in addition to the increase of their representation in communal councils, which is a positive signal from political parties and the State on the horizon of achieving parity as laid out in Article 19 of the Constitution.”

The meeting witnessed the participation of all the members of the IPU and representatives of governments, donor organizations concerned with United Nations programs, and civil society.
