In implementation of the obligations of the House of Representatives under its open Parliament plan, and as part of its openness to the civil society associations, the Board member and Deputy Chairperson of the House of Representatives Maryama Boujemaa took part in the activities of the training session on the implementation of the sustainable development goals within the communes of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Houceima, jointly organized in Tangier on December 4th, 2020 by the Consultative Body on Civil Society and Equality in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Houceima Regional Council, the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and the Mediterranean Cooperation and Development Foundation. During this training session, the participant presented the initiatives of the House of Representatives in implementing the 2030 sustainable development goals, both through its legislative and Government control competences and through the evaluation of public policies, and the regional and international seminars and conferences it organized.
The deputy affirmed that amongst the measures adopted, in this respect, on the institutional level were the creation of the Thematic Working Group in Charge of the Healthcare System, the Thematic Working Group in Charge of Green Economy, the Thematic Working Group in Charge of Equality and Parity, and the Thematic Working Group in Charge of Evaluating Public Policies in Elementary Education. In Participatory democracy, the deputy noted the creation of the Petitions and Motions Committee within the House, which convened several meetings with civil society bodies, in addition to the creation of a more interactive website of the House that allows citizens to comment on the draft legislative texts and to interact with deputies.
The House of Representatives also hosted several national and international meetings regarding sustainable development, including:
- Participation in the 16th edition of the National Congress on Child Rights (November 22nd, 2019).
- Hosting the 14th meeting of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (December 17th, 2020).
- Organizing a study day on the "Social Protection System in Morocco" (December 25th, 2020).
- Holding the parliamentary meeting on ratifying the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (December 6-7th, 2018).
- Organizing a national seminar on the draft framework law regarding the Education, Training, and Scientific Research System (October 23rd, 2018).
- Taking part in the 3rd World Parliamentary Forum on Challenges of Social Justice and Propositions for New Development Model (February 19th, 2020).
- Organizing the African parliamentary consultative meeting on "Climate and Sustainable Development, from agreements to action: Vision of African Parliamentarians (October 27th, 2017).
- Organization of a study day by the Thematic Working Group in Charge of Equality and Parity on "gender budget."
Ms. Boujemaa noted that in addition to its competences of legislating and adopting budgets, the House of Representatives plays a central role in implementing and monitoring the implementation of sustainable development goals through the control over Government action and evaluation of public policies, highlighting also the importance of the participation of the Parliament in drafting national voluntary review reports on the achievement of sustainable development goals and the importance of preparing a plan to contribute to raising awareness of the importance of the adoption and appropriation, by the representatives, of sustainable development goals and the mechanisms to monitor their implementation, as well as by the civil society associations and citizens, as part of its obligations under the open Parliament plan.
