The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs, and Moroccan Expatriates Committee at the House of Representatives, Rep. Nadia Bouaida, and the Committee member, Rep. Nadia El Kansouri, held, on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, a virtual meeting with the Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the Salvadoran Parliament, Ms. Ana Magdalena Figueroa.
During the meeting, the two parties reviewed the development of the bilateral ties linking the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of El Salvador, especially in the last decade, mainly thanks to the high-level understanding between the two countries and the convergence of their views and positions on various regional and international questions.
In this respect, Rep. Nadia Bouaida recalled the dynamism characterizing cooperation between the two countries on all levels, particularly through the exchange of visits and intensification of efforts and meetings between Moroccan officials and their Salvadoran counterparts. In the same regard, she noted that “this success would not have taken place without the strong will of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the President of the Republic of El Salvador, H.E. Nayib Bukele.”
In the same vein, Rep. Bouaida added that “the rectification of the position of El Salvador regarding the Moroccanness of the Sahara through the retraction of the recognition of the phantom republic was the turning point of the bilateral ties. This milestone was established in the joint statement signed by the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the two countries in June 2019, culminating in a new cooperation roadmap in various areas.”
The two parties agreed that the Moroccan and Salvadoran parliamentarians share a joint responsibility in exploiting the available opportunities to strengthen the legal arsenal regulating bilateral and multilateral ties and promote public and private investments within a win-win partnership.
In this regard, Rep. Bouaida called upon her Salvadoran counterpart to work together to institutionalize bilateral and multilateral parliamentary ties and advance them towards the level of distinguished friendship between the Moroccan Parliament and the parliaments of the countries of the Caribbean and Central America. The Moroccan Representative also called for seizing the available cooperation opportunities to find solutions and provide the efficient means to remedy the regional and international issues of mutual interest, such as migration, security, investment, and the fight against terrorism.
For her part, Ms. Ana Magdalena Figueroa commended the words of her Moroccan counterpart. On the same occasion, she gave a brief overview of the Salvadoran experience in empowering women politically. In this regard, Rep. Bouaida presented figures on the evolution of women’s presence in the Parliament, elected bodies, and the Government. Meanwhile, Rep. El Kansouri highlighted the leadership of the Kingdom of Morocco at the regional level in the area of including women in political life.
The meeting culminated in the presentation of several proposals by the two parties, and they agreed on their implementation in the form of a work program and to pursue regular consultation.
