Moroccan Parliamentary Representation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union Participates in 149th IPU Assembly, 213th Governing Council Meeting and Related Meetings

Members of the Moroccan Parliamentary Representation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) are taking part in the proceedings of the 149th IPU Assembly, the 214ᵉ Governing Council meeting and related meetings, which are being held from March 13 to 17, 2024, at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland, on the theme: “Harnessing science, technology and innovation (STI) for a more peaceful and sustainable future”.

The delegation from the Moroccan Parliamentary Representation, led by Rep. Omar Hejira (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism), includes Rep. Mustapha Reddad (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Khaddouj Slassi (Socialist Group - Ittihadi Opposition), and Mr. Najib El Khadi, Secretary General of the House of Representatives.

Members of the parliamentary delegation took part in the meetings of the African, Arab, and Islamic geopolitical groups, held respectively on October 12 and 13, 2024. These meetings were marked by the presentation of topics on the agenda of the IPU Assembly, as well as by the examination of vacancies within its bodies.

The members of the Moroccan Parliamentary Representation also took part in the emergency meeting of the Arab Group, devoted to discussing the alarming situation in the Middle East and the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

During the Assembly, the members of the Moroccan delegation will take part in the proceedings of all IPU bodies, including the Governing Council, the Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, and the Committee on Middle East Questions. They will also take part in meetings of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, which will address a number of important issues relating to peace and interfaith dialogue, equal opportunities, health, environmental protection, climate change, and artificial intelligence.

The General Assembly will adopt resolutions on the emergency item and the theme adopted by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, entitled “The impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.” The Assembly will also give preparatory consideration to the forthcoming resolution of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development entitled: “Parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-lasting impact of conflicts, including armed conflicts, on sustainable development.”

The General Assembly is expected to close with the adoption of an outcome document on the general theme of the general debate: “Harnessing science, technology and innovation (STI) for a more peaceful and sustainable future.”
