Moroccan Parliament Hosts 30th Extraordinary Meeting of FOPREL

The Moroccan Parliament hosts on November 27-28, 2024, at the seat of the House in Rabat, the 30th Extraordinary Meeting of the  Forum of Speakers of Legislative Assemblies of Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico (FOPREL).

On this occasion, an international parliamentary seminar will take place on “Cooperation between Africa and Latin America to address the security and peace challenges.” The seminar will shed light on the parliamentary strategies and initiatives aimed at reinforcing peace and coexistence.

The 30th FOPREL Extraordinary Meeting, held under the theme: "Facing the common challenges of security, climate change, and economic development," is expected to feature the announcement of the promotion of the Moroccan Parliament from “permanent observer member,” the status it acquired in 2014, to “advanced partner.”

The participants in the meeting will discuss four main themes linked to addressing security challenges within and outside Central America, parliamentary action aimed at facing the social and economic repercussions of climate change, integrated development, and the joint regional parliamentary action plan. The meeting will also feature the presentation of the regional framework law on combatting human trafficking, particularly women and children.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Speakers of the legislative assemblies and the heads of the participating parliamentary delegations from Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico will hold a series of meetings with several Moroccan officials.

It should be noted that the FOPREL was established in 1994. The Forum aims to assist the mechanisms of implementing and coordinating the laws between its Member States, create consultative mechanisms between the Speakers of legislative assemblies to address the various issues arising in the region, and support the legislative studies on the regional level.

The FOPREL brings together the Speakers of the legislative assemblies of its nine Member States: Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. It also comprises observer members: the Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO), the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), the Chilean Chamber of Deputies, and the Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco.
