The members of the Moroccan Parliamentary Representation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union are taking part in the proceedings of the 148th IPU Assembly, the 213th meeting of its Governing Council, and the related meetings held on March 23-27, 2024, at the Geneva International Conference Center in Switzerland on "Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding."
The delegation of the Moroccan Parliamentary Representation, led by Rep. Ahmed Touizi (Chairperson of the Group of Authenticity and Modernity), includes Rep. Mustapha Reddad (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Omar Hejira (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism), Rep. Khdouj Slassi (Socialist Group – Ittihadi Opposition), Cllr. Kamal Aït Mik (Group of the National Rally of Independents), and Mr. Najib El Khadi (Secretary-General of the House of Representatives).
The Moroccan parliamentary delegation participated in the meetings of the African, Arab, and Islamic Geopolitical Groups, held respectively on March 22-23, 2024. The meetings featured the presentation of the themes inscribed on the order of business of the IPU Assembly and the examination of the vacant positions within the Union's bodies. The participants also debated some urgent items suggested before the Assembly, particularly the one on the tragic conditions that Palestinians in Gaza are going through.
In this respect, the Head of the Moroccan parliamentary delegation, Rep. Ahmed Touizi, underscored the imperative of unifying the positions of the Arab, Islamic, and African Geopolitical Groups for the Inter-Parliamentary Union to take a resolute stance during this Assembly in support of ensuring the rights of Palestinians based on the resolutions of international legitimacy and the two-State solution agreed upon by the global community as a realistic solution to establish lasting stability and peace in the region.
During the Assembly, the Moroccan delegation will participate in the proceedings of all IPU bodies, including the Governing Council and the Standing Committees: the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and the Committee on Middle East Questions. They will also take part in the meetings of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, which will discuss several important questions linked to peace, interfaith dialogue, equal opportunities, health, environment protection, climate change, and artificial intelligence.
It should be noted that the Assembly is expected to adopt a resolution on "Addressing the social and humanitarian impact of autonomous weapon systems and artificial intelligence" and another one on "Partnerships for climate action: Promoting access to affordable green energy, and ensuring innovation, responsibility, and equity."
