Midrand: Moroccan Parliamentary Delegation Takes Part in Pan-African Parliament’s Extraordinary Session of the Sixth Legislative Term

A delegation of the Moroccan Parliament is taking part in the proceedings of the Extraordinary Session of the Pan-African Parliament’s Sixth Legislative Term, held on March 20-27, 2024, in Midrand, South Africa.

The delegation includes Rep. Leila Dahi (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Khadija Arouhal (Group of Progress and Socialism), Rep. Abdessamad Haiker (Parliamentary Caucus of Justice and Development), Cllr. Youssef Eid (Socialist Group – Ittihadi Opposition), and Cllr. Hanae Belkheir (Group of the General Union of Moroccan Workers).

The Extraordinary Session will feature the renewal of the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament through the election of a new President and the First and Fourth Vice-Presidents, in accordance with the decision emanating from the 44th meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union, held last February in Addis Ababa, which stipulates the imperative of filling the vacant positions in the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament for this continental organization to resume its action and contribute actively to speaking for African peoples, defending their essential interests, and implementing the programs and policies of the African Union.

Besides, the Executive Council tasked the African Union Commission with supervising these by-elections to ensure they take place in a transparent and just atmosphere.

It should be noted that the Pan-African Parliament gathers the parliamentarians of the Member States of the African Union. The PAP was created by virtue of Article 5 of the AU's Constitutive Act and officially initiated its work on March 18, 2004. The jurisdiction of the PAP covers the insurance of the full participation of African peoples in the Continent’s development and economic complementarity. The institution currently enjoys a consultative status and supervises the budget of the African Union.

Each Member State of the Pan-African Parliament shall be represented by five parliamentarians from the Majority and the Opposition, including at least one woman, elected or appointed by their national Parliaments or Assemblies.
