In a Telephone Conversation with Speaker of House of Representatives, President of European Parliament Lauds Role of Kingdom of Morocco in Consolidating Security and Stability on Southern Shore of the Mediterranean

Speaker of the House of Representatives Habib El Malki held, on Friday, October 2^nd, 2020, a telephone conversation with President of the European Parliament David Sassoli on several topical issues of mutual concern.

In this regard, the President of the European Parliament lauded the role of the Kingdom of Morocco in consolidating security and stability on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, praising particularly the initiatives taken by the Kingdom to resolve the Libyan crisis and its efforts to support dialogue and bring closer the points of view between the various Libyan parties.

For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed the depth of the friendship and cooperation ties linking the Kingdom of Morocco to the European Union, recalling that Morocco enjoys the status of “advanced partner” with the European Union and the status of “partner for democracy” with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Mr. El Malki highlighted that Morocco shares the same values with the European Union countries as regards fighting the phenomenon of migration and the impacts of climate change, consolidating democracy and human rights, promoting women’s rights, as well as entrenching peace and security in the world, and in the Mediterranean region in particular.

The two sides commended the role of the Morocco-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee in consolidating cooperation between the two sides and bringing together their views on issues of mutual interest. The two parties also agreed to give new impetus to the action of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, of which Morocco is one of the main founders, given its importance as a space to promote dialogue and debate on priority issues in the region.

At the invitation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, both parties agreed that the President of the European Parliament would perform a working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco at the earliest opportunity. The visit will be an occasion to discuss the means to develop the friendship and cooperation ties between Morocco and the European Union and give them more dynamism and strength.
