Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki took part on Thursday, February 25, 2021, in the 39th Regular Session of the Forum of Chairpersons of Legislative Assemblies of Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico (FOPREL), held via videoconference.
In his address on this occasion, the Speaker of the House of Representatives lauded the advance of cooperation between the Moroccan Parliament and the Forum of Chairpersons of Legislative Assemblies of Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico (FOPREL). He also highlighted that the interest of Morocco in the South-South Cooperation is reflected by its strong will to open communication channels, exchange experiences and expertise, and unify positions with the region's countries.
Mr. El Malki also noted the contribution of the Moroccan Parliament, since its accession to the Forum as an observing member in 2014, to giving new impetus to cooperation between the two sides. In the same respect, he expressed the firm will to pursue dialogue with the FOPREL and to consolidate the friendship bonds with the representatives of the region's peoples under the new presidency of the Forum.
It should be noted that the 39th Regular Session of the FOPREL was marked by the handover of the Forum's presidency to the President of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, Dulce María Sauri. The FOPREL, established in 1994, aims to advance the implementation and coordination of the legislations of its member States. It also aims to create consultative mechanisms between the chairpersons of the legislative institutions of the member States to address the various challenges arising in the region, and to assist in the legislative studies on the regional level.
The Forum gathers the chairpersons of the legislative assemblies of the ten member States, namely Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The headquarters of the FOPREL is located in the Nicaraguan capital Managua.
