Speaker of House of Representatives Receives Mauritanian Parliamentary Delegation

Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki received on Friday, July 9, 2021, at the House, a parliamentary delegation from the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, lead by first deputy-Speaker of the Assembly Sidney Sokhna, at the sidelines of their participation in the consultative meeting of the Speakers of African Parliaments, held in Rabat on Thursday.

On this occasion, the Speaker of the House of Representatives commended the deep-rooted brotherly ties linking the two countries and their peoples. In the same respect, he affirmed that parliamentary diplomacy could open new cooperation opportunities between the two countries and called for institutionalizing the relations between the two legislative institutions through the conclusion of a memorandum of cooperation between the two sides. The Speaker also proposed creating a Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum that would meet regularly in the two countries and which would be a platform for dialogue and exchange of views on the means to advance bilateral ties towards further solidarity and cooperation.

Mr. El Malki praised the participation of the Mauritanian parliamentary delegation in the consultative meeting of the Speakers of African Parliaments, noting that Morocco always stands by Africa, works to advance joint African action, and prioritizes dialogue to solve conflicts in a way that serves the interests of the region's peoples.

For their part, the Mauritanian parliamentary delegation, including also Ms. Messouda Baham and Mr. Sghair El Atigh, stressed the importance of consolidating cooperation ties between the Moroccan House of Representatives and the Mauritanian National Assembly. They also called for intensifying the exchange visits, expertise, and experiences between the two institutions.

The members of the Mauritanian parliamentary delegation affirmed the important role of Morocco in resolving issues in Africa and confirmed that Morocco's return to the African Union in 2017 closed a huge gap. Furthermore, the Mauritanian representatives hailed the support of Morocco to Mauritania in education and training and commended the development of Morocco in agriculture, economy, health, and other sectors.
