Speaker of House of Representatives Meets Spain’s Ambassador to Morocco

Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Habib El Malki held talks on Thursday, January 30th at the House’s headquarters with Spain’s Ambassador to Morocco Mr. Ricardo Diez-Hochleitner Rodriguez. The talks discussed means of consolidating relations between parliaments of the two countries, and between the two countries in general.

At the start of the meeting, Speaker of the House of Representatives lauded the excellent ties linking Morocco and Spain, which are “characterized with continuous dialogue and consultation.” He noted that the House of Representatives notes with satisfaction the constructive and positive dialogue that marked the meeting of both countries ministers of foreign affairs, following the House’s adoption of two government bills relative to updating Morocco’s legal arsenal on maritime zones and boundaries in compliance with the International Law of the Sea last week.

For his part, Spain’s Ambassador to Morocco commended the positivity that marks the bilateral relations between the two countries, highlighting the considerable development in commercial and economic exchanges between them. In this respect, he said, “commercial exchange between Spain and Morocco is a role model of equitable trade and complementarity between countries,” adding that “Morocco is Spain’s second trade partner outside the European Union.”

Mr. Rodriguez lauded the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco in fighting illegal immigration towards Europe, noting a decrease in the number of illegal immigrants coming from Morocco in the last year.

The two parties reviewed the different aspects of cooperation between both countries’ Parliaments, in anticipation of holding a Morocco-Spain Parliamentary Forum in Rabat in the future. They also exchanged views on means to consolidate parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The two parties also stressed the importance of cultural exchange and promotion of the historical and civilizational heritage shared by the two countries for centuries.
