Speaker of House of Representatives Meets Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece

Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Habib El Malki held talks on Wednesday, January 15th at the House’s headquarters, with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Nikolaos Dendias, currently on a working visit to Morocco.

On this occasion, Speaker of the House of Representatives lauded “the positive and firm relations linking the two countries,” noting that Morocco and Greece share the same values concerning defending human rights and recalling the humanitarian aspect when dealing with the immigration phenomenon. He also highlighted that Morocco adopts an immigration policy that respects the migrants’ dignity and tries to integrate them into the Moroccan society progressively.

As for the cause of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, Mr. El Malki confirmed that the artificial conflict around the Moroccan Sahara goes back to the Cold War and impedes the aspirations of the region’s peoples towards unity and integrity. He also recalled the initiative of HM King Mohammed VI regarding opening dialogue channels with Algeria without preconditions, to settle the issues that hinder the development of bilateral relations and the construction of a Maghreb Union.

Concerning parliament, Speaker of the House of Representatives pointed out the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in bolstering bilateral relations, calling for institutionalizing cooperation between both countries Parliaments, and giving greater dynamism to the work of parliamentary friendship groups of both countries.  

For his part, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs praised the approach of the Kingdom of Morocco towards the phenomenon of immigration. He said that "Morocco respects the dignity of migrants and addresses this phenomenon with a humanitarian dimension with nothing in return.”

Mr. Nikolaos Dendias also commended the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco to resolve the Libyan conflict, which were crowned by the signature of the Skhirat Agreement, calling for Morocco’s involvement in international and UN initiatives to remedy this crisis.

Moreover, The Greek Foreign Minister conveyed the invitation of the Speaker of Greek Parliament to Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Habib El Malki for a working visit to Greece, which would be an occasion to promote cooperation between the two legislative institutions.

Besides, the two parties exchanged views on numerous issues related to regional conjuncture, and the means to enhance cooperation and coordinate the views of both countries on issues of common interest.
