Speaker of the House of Representatives Holds Talks with Cambodian Prime Minister and Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Rachid Talbi El Alami, and his entourage, held talks on November 22-23, 2022, with the Cambodian Prime Minister, Mr. Hun Sen, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Samdech Heng Samrin, and the Speaker of the Senate, Say Chhum. The talks took place on the sidelines of the 43rd General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), held on November 20-25, in the Kingdom of Cambodia, under the theme: “Advancing Together for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient ASEAN.”

During the talks, the Cambodian delegation reiterated the constant position of the Kingdom of Cambodia in support of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco. They also stressed the importance of consolidating bilateral and multilateral ties, especially following the acquisition by the Moroccan House of Representatives of the status of “observer member” within the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). The talks between the two parties also covered the means to strengthen said relations through the exchange of visits, the parliamentary friendship groups, constant communication, regional and international coordination at the parliamentary fora, and the exchange of expertise and experiences.

On the same occasion, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Rachid Talbi El Alami commended the quality of ties linking the Moroccan House of Representatives and the Cambodian Parliament, calling for their consolidation at the bilateral and multilateral levels. In the same regard, he noted the importance of such meetings, the sustainability of active parliamentary communication, the exchange of views, and the sharing of experiences and expertise, particularly regarding the questions of mutual governmental and parliamentary interest. The Speaker also recalled the responsibility entrusted to parliamentarians at the national, regional, and international levels to promote dialogue, understanding, and coordination, in order to address the common challenges, and reach the highest levels of mutual prosperity and development, which is an aspiration that AIPA shares.

Besides, the Speaker of the House added that such visits and meetings are likely to strengthen dialogue and effective communication and are an opportunity to highlight the progress made by the Kingdom, particularly in constitutional, human rights, security, energy, environmental, health, and social fields, in addition to the institutional development accomplished over the past decade and the achievements of the Moroccan House of Representatives, which have enabled it to occupy distinguished positions within many continental, regional, and international parliamentary bodies and organizations.

The meeting was also an opportunity to exchange views on consolidating bilateral and multilateral ties at various levels, in addition to the roles of parliaments and parliamentarians, and to discuss several questions of shared parliamentary priority.

It should be noted that the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco enjoys the status of “observer member” within the AIPA, as the approval of its accession was announced during AIPA’s 41st General Assembly, held in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi in September 2020, which is an unprecedented achievement as the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco is the only African and Arab Parliament that enjoys membership within this Asian inter-parliamentary body. Such success is mainly due to the leading roles of the Kingdom of Morocco as a locomotive of communication and cooperation between African and southeastern Asian countries to promote security and stability and consolidate development and economic and social prosperity under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God glorify and assist him.

Taking part alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 43rd General Assembly of the AIPA are Rep. Ahmed Touizi, Chairperson of the Group of Authenticity and Modernity, and Mustapha Tarfia, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Thailand.
