A Moroccan parliamentary delegation took part in the proceedings of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, held in Paris on March 5, 2024.
In addition to questions relating to the current international situation, the members of the Committee addressed fundamental issues in line with the commitments made by PACE to promote and deepen democratic practice in Europe and its neighborhood. These include the promotion of a code of good conduct for referendums, the relationship between the parliamentary majority and the opposition in a democracy, and the strengthening of democracy through participatory and deliberative processes.
The meeting comes on the heels of the election of the new PACE President, Greece's Theodoros Rousopoulos, who succeeded Dutchman Tiny Kox last January.
The current situation is conducive to an active positioning of the Moroccan Parliament, which has enjoyed the status of a partner for democracy within the PACE since 2011, an innovative experience whose success has been established through three evaluation reports presented in 2013, 2015, and 2019.
The Moroccan Parliament's ambition for a more advanced partnership, which it has displayed on many occasions, has visibly gained ground. It is now time for the Moroccan Parliament, as a model partner, to be further actively involved in PACE's actions, particularly with regard to new partners.
