The 44th Conference of the African Parliamentary Union and the 78th Session of Its Executive Committee kicked off with the participation of a delegation from the House of Representatives. The works take place on November 5-10, 2022, in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The Moroccan Parliamentary delegation includes, from the House of Representatives:
- Rep. Abdelilah Amehdi (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism), Head of the delegation;
- Rep. Zineb Simou (Group of the National Rally of Independents);
- Rep. Hatim Ben Rkia (Group of the National Rally of Independents);
- Rep. Nadia Bouzandoufa (Group of Authenticity and Modernity);
- Rep. Idriss Chebchali (Group of Authenticity and Modernity);
- Rep. Cherkaoui Znaydi (Socialist Group);
From the House of Councilors:
- Cllr. Mohammed El Harma El-Makhloul (Group of the General Union of Moroccan Workers);
- Cllr. Khalihanna El Karch (Coordinator of the Group of the Democratic Labor Confederation).
The Conference of the African Parliamentary Union started with the 78th Session of the Executive Committee on November 5-6, 2022. The opening session featured welcoming addresses by the Speaker of the Zimbabwean Senate, Hon. Mabel Chinomona and the President of the Executive Committee, Hon. Mohammed Ali Houmed.
In these two-day-long works, the Committee tackled the points inscribed on its agenda, mainly the examination of the approval of the adherence of the Russian Parliament and the Association of African Libraries and Media Companies to the Union as observer members.
Besides, the Secretary-General presented his report on the implementation of the resolutions and recommendations of the Conference and the agenda of the Committee for 2023. In this respect, the Moroccan delegation made several remarks regarding the inscription of some themes on the agenda, namely climate change, the role of parliaments in finding solutions to ensure food security for African countries amidst the Russia-Ukraine War, the role of parliaments in finding solutions to water scarcity, irregular migration, openness to all African Parliaments, and the resolution of funding issues and payment of contributions of some States.
Following the ratification of the report on the implementation of the resolutions and recommendations of the Conference and the yearly agenda, the participants ratified the report of the Ad hoc Committee on Contributions and the draft agenda of the 44th Conference of the Union.
On another note, the parliamentarians of the African Parliamentary Union renewed the mandate of the Secretary-General. In this respect, the Moroccan delegation expressed its support for a new mandate of the Secretary-General to pursue his mission of advancing the Union's action.
The Executive Committee concluded its works by ratifying the agenda of the 79th Session, which Togo officially proposed to host.
It should be noted that the Session of the African Parliamentary Union will go on with the Committee of Women Parliamentarians meeting, followed by the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments.
