A high-level delegation from the Moroccan Parliament, headed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami, and including the members of the national representation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, will take part in the 144th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the 209th Session of the Union’s Governing Council and the related meetings, which will take place at the seat of the Indonesian Parliament in Nusa Dua on March 20-24.
The delegation of the national parliamentary representation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union includes the Representatives Ahmed Touizi (Chairperson of the Group of Authenticity and Modernity) and Khdouj Slassi (Socialist Group), in addition to the Councilors Kamal Ait Mik (Group of the National Rally of Independents) and Lahcen Chamis (Group of Authenticity and Modernity).
The General Debate will focus on the theme: “Getting to zero: Mobilizing parliaments to act on climate change." In this respect, the participants will tackle the role of parliaments in contributing to the implementation of national and international policies and conventions relating to climate change to promote international parliamentary action regarding the matter.
The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate. It will also adopt several resolutions on the emergency item and on the subject item taken up by the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security entitled Rethinking and reframing the approach to peace processes with a view to fostering lasting peace and by the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development entitled Leveraging Information and Communication Technology as an enabler for the education sector, including in times of pandemic.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, the Moroccan delegation will hold several meetings with the participating delegations as part of reinforcing bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation.
The Assembly includes all IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians. The General Debate will provide a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views and seek to galvanize parliamentary action to support and consolidate democracy in the world.
