Moroccan Parliament Highlights in Cyprus the Pioneering Experience of the Kingdom of Morocco in Fighting Corruption and Defending Democracy

A delegation of the Moroccan Parliament took part, on May 27-28, in Nicosia, Cyprus, in the International Conference on "The role of national parliaments in the fight against corruption and the defense of democracy," organized by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, in collaboration with the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus.

The Moroccan delegation involved:

- Rep. Khalid Hatimy (Group of Authenticity and Modernity);

 - Cllr. Chaimae Zemzami (Group of the National Rally of the Independents);

 - Cllr. Abdelkrim El Hams (Group of Authenticity and Modernity).

The agenda of this conference included three main themes, namely the role of national parliaments in preventing and combating corruption, the central policies aimed at preventing corruption and promoting integrity, transparency and accountability, and the contribution of institutions and media to the investigation and prosecution of corruption and the perpetrators.

On this occasion, Rep. Khaled Hatimi gave an address on behalf of the Moroccan parliamentary delegation on Friday, May 27, 2022, where he shed light on the experience of the Kingdom of Morocco under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in the fight and containment of the phenomenon of corruption. In this regard, he underlined Morocco's commitment to a series of projects aimed at strengthening the principles of integrity, transparency, and the fight against corruption, by adopting a comprehensive, participatory and integrated approach involving all government departments and the various stakeholders, which is accompanied by a series of measures. He also noted that, following the ratification by the Kingdom of Morocco of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in 2007, our country had worked to develop the relevant legal and institutional arsenal per international standards in this area.

In the same vein, Rep. Khalid Hatimy pointed out that in order to join and coordinate the efforts of the various stakeholders, our country has adopted a national strategy to combat corruption by creating a National Commission whose mission is to monitor and ensure the implementation of the conclusions of this strategy, which aims to moralize public life, disseminate the values of integrity and transparency and consolidate the confidence of citizens in national institutions.

At the end of his address, the Representatives underscored that the conference is a valuable opportunity to strengthen cooperation, accelerate the pace of global action against corruption and encourage the exchange of experiences and best practices to prevent and curb the said phenomenon.

In parallel with the conference, the Moroccan parliamentary delegation met with the Cypriot and Greek parliamentary delegation in the presence of the Vice-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Ms. Irene Charalambides, member of the House of Representatives of Cyprus. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and improve coordination and consultation on issues of mutual interest.
