Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki highlighted that the strategy of Morocco to fight the Coronavirus pandemic revolves around two axes. The first axis is national, while the second concerns Africa. The statement of the House’s Speaker took place during his participation in the meeting of the Board of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF), held on Monday, July 6th, 2020, via videoconference, with the participation of Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives Mohamed Touimi Benjelloun.
Mr. El Malki stated that Morocco had taken several legal measures to manage the pandemic in full compliance with the Constitution. In this respect, he noted the adoption of the sanitary lockdown, the creation of a special fund dedicated to the management of the Coronavirus, and other preventive measures. These actions enabled the Kingdom to contain the pandemic and mitigate its severe social and economic repercussions.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives also highlighted the keenness of the Kingdom of Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to consolidate the values of solidarity and synergy with the other African countries, which was demonstrated through providing medical aid and equipment to 15 countries in different regions of the Continent.
In the same context, the House’s Speaker noted that the pandemic generated a rupture with the previous stage, considering that globalization showed its finitude and that countries shifted their focus towards their internal affairs. These matters raise several doubts and questions about the effectiveness of the development models that marked the post-World War II period.
It should be noted that the Moroccan Parliament joined the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF) in 1979. The Assembly is a forum for discussion, presentation of proposals, and exchange of information and experiences. It involves around 55 parliamentary representations spread across the seven continents.
