Legislative Elections of Wednesday, September 8, 2021

The legislative elections are scheduled for Wednesday, September 8, 2021, under which the members of the House of Representatives shall be elected for the 11th parliamentary term: 2021-2026.

In accordance with the provisions set forth in Article 62 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Morocco, the members of the House of Representatives are elected for five years by direct universal suffrage. The parliamentary term concludes on the opening of the October session of the fifth year that follows the election of the House.

The number of representatives, the electoral system, the principles of constituencies, the conditions of eligibility, the cases of incompatibility, the rules of limitation of accumulation of mandates and the system of electoral dispute resolution, are established by an organic law.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the members of its Board, as well as the chairpersons of the Standing Committees and their bureaus, are elected at the onset of the parliamentary term, and again in the third year at the April session, and for the remaining period of the said parliamentary term.

In addition, the Organic Law 04.21, amending and supplementing the Organic Law 27.11 on the House of Representatives, provides that the House consists of 395 members elected by direct universal suffrage on the basis of the list system and are distributed as follows: 305 members are elected at the local constituencies level and 90 members are elected at the regional constituencies level.

The same Organic Law stipulates that the first and second positions in each list of candidature at the regional constituencies level are exclusively reserved for women, without however depriving them the right to candidature for the seats fixed for the local constituencies.
