Kingdom of Morocco Elected to the Presidency of the ASGP in Madrid

The Kingdom of Morocco was elected unanimously to the Presidency of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP) during a meeting of the Association held on Saturday, November 27, 2021, in Madrid on the sidelines of the IPU's 143rd Assembly.

The Kingdom of Morocco was elected, for the first time, in the name of Najib El Khadi, the Secretary-General of the House of Representatives.

In a statement on the occasion, Mr. El Khadi noted that the election of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Presidency of the Association, the largest parliamentary gathering of secretaries-general, reflects the privileged position of the Kingdom of Morocco and its Parliament within the international parliamentary arena.

The Secretary-General of the House added that this election represents a recognition of the Moroccan parliamentary experience and its achievements in the latest decades thanks to the major reforms launched by the Kingdom of Morocco under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He also highlighted that this election is the culmination of long-term work by the Moroccan Parliament and of its active participation in the regional and international fora.

It should be noted that the ASGP, which convened for the first time on August 16, 1939, in Oslo, focuses on studying the procedures, practices and working methodologies of parliaments. It also suggests measures that would enhance the said methodologies and ensure cooperation between the services of its member parliaments.

The Association, which gathers more than 130 parliaments, provides the IPU with assistance in matters that fall under its competence. In addition, the President of the Association presents annual reports on its activities to the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
