Members of the Moroccan Parliamentary Representation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Rep. Mustapha Reddad and Rep. Ahmed Touizi, took part on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, through videoconferencing, in the third Inter-Parliamentary seminar on the theme: "Nuclear Disarmament and Human Security." The IPU organized the webinar in cooperation with the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP), Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) and the World Future Council (WFC).
During this meeting, a number of specialists in the field discussed the most prominent international instruments to reduce the dangers posed by nuclear armament to the international community. In the same context, they noted the vital role of parliamentarians in activating these instruments.
The participants also reviewed the humanitarian impacts of the nuclear arms race and the advantages of nuclear disarmament for human security. They also stressed the necessity of raising awareness about the current link between military expenditures for nuclear weapons and those for peacekeeping operations, public health and pandemic management.
It should be noted that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), signed by 53 countries, entered into force on January 22, 2021.
