The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) launched the work of the high-level international conference on “The Palermo Convention: Future of the Fight Against Transnational Organized Crime”. The event benefits from the cooperation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Vittorio Occorsio Foundation. The conference is held on June 20 – 21, 2022, in Naples – Italy.
The organization of this conference falls within the scope of the review mechanism for the current status of effectiveness of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocols (the Palermo Convention), which is considered to be the parliamentary contribution to the review process of this Convention.

The agenda of this conference includes a discussion of several topics, including:
- Human trafficking and migrant smuggling and exploitation
- Criminal misuse of information and communication technologies
- Nexus between organized crime and terrorism
- Environmental crimes.
The conference featured valuable interventions by members of the Moroccan parliamentary delegation, who reviewed the various dimensions of the Moroccan strategy in the fight against transnational crime and terrorism. On that point, the delegation stated that this strategy takes into account the promotion of the values of tolerance and moderation, namely through the reform of the religious field; promotion of human rights; rule of law; fight against poverty, vulnerability, and social disparities; strengthening of security governance; condemnation of all forms of terrorism and its financing; strengthening of formal and informal international cooperation; as well as the accompaniment and reintegration of former detainees presumed to be terrorists.
It is worth noting that the conference offered an opportunity to review the current status of effectiveness of the Palermo Convention and to exchange experiences and expertise in the fight against transnational organized crime among representatives of participating parliaments.
