House of Representatives Takes Part in 29th Annual Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly

The Moroccan parliamentary representation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) took part in the Assembly’s 29th Annual Session, organized in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on July 2-6, 2022.

The parliamentary delegation of the House of Representatives, which enjoys the status of a partner for cooperation within the organization, was represented by Rep. Marouane Chbaatou, a member of the parliamentary representation and the Group of the National Rally of Independents.

The Session’s agenda covers the presentation and discussion of the reports of the general committees of the Assembly and the related draft recommendations. The Committees are the Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions, the Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology & Environment, and the Committee on Political Affairs and Security.

The convention of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly comes in a context marked by significant challenges emanating from the Ukraine-Russia conflict. In this respect, several themes captured the attention of participants, including the discussion of the political, security, and humanitarian impacts of the war; the economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic; questions on migration and environment; evaluation of the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan; gender equality; protection of human rights amidst crises; and freedom of the press.

During the bilateral meetings held  by the Moroccan delegation on the sidelines of the Session, several themes were discussed, especially the developments of the situation of migration and security in the Mediterranean region, and the central role of the Kingdom of Morocco in consolidating security and stability in the area. In this vein, the parties proposed the convention of coordinative meetings in the earliest convenience to find efficient means to reinforce cooperation between the parliaments of the Member States and the Moroccan House of Representatives.
