Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki held, on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, via videoconference, talks with the Chairman of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China Li Zhanshu. The talks tackled the relations between the two countries and the two legislative institutions, and other mutual interest topics.
In these talks, the two parties commended the new dynamic marking Morocco-China cooperation since the visit performed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to China in 2016 and the conclusion of a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries as “bilateral cooperation has witnessed a qualitative leap in economy, trade, and other sectors.”
The Chairperson of the Chinese National People’s Congress affirmed that the telephone conversation between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping in August 2020 had given new impetus to the partnership between the two countries, particularly in fighting COVID-19. He also stated that his country provided Morocco with a significant amount of anti-Covid19 vaccine doses and will provide the Kingdom with around 10 million doses in April and May 2021. In the same respect, he commended the leadership of His Majesty the King and the remarkable results achieved by Morocco in fighting the pandemic.
For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives noted that the epidemiological situation worldwide is an opportunity to affirm the quality of cooperation between the two countries. Mr. El Malki highlighted the preemptive plan launched by Morocco under the supervision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to limit the repercussions of the pandemic. He also expressed gratitude and appreciation for China's support to Morocco and the other African countries in this area. In the same respect, he noted that the project of creating a Chinese Moroccan company to produce vaccines is of great importance, as these vaccines will be directed at African countries, which “will allow Africa to overcome the consequences of the pandemic in a short time.”
At the parliamentary level, the two parties agreed on concluding a cooperation agreement between the two legislative institutions, intensifying the exchange of visits and expertise, boosting the action of the parliamentary friendship groups in the two countries, and consolidating the continuous coordination and consultation in the international parliamentary fora. The Chairperson of the Chinese National People's Congress extended an invitation to the Speaker of the House of Representatives to perform a working visit to China, which would be an opportunity to discuss the means for advancing cooperation between the two countries in different sectors.
The two parties discussed several other topics, including the development projects in the Kingdom, the achievements realized by China at the economic and social levels, the trilateral Morocco-China-Africa cooperation, the Arab-Chinese cooperation, the mutual support at the international level, and several other topics of mutual interest.
