High-Level Participation of the Moroccan Parliament at the 146th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Manama, Bahrain

The proceedings of the 146th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the 211th Session of its Governing Council, and the related meetings kick off with the participation of a high-level delegation from the Moroccan Parliament on March 11-15, 2023, in Manama, Bahrain.

The Speaker of the House of Councilors, Hon. Naam Miyara, will lead the Moroccan delegation that includes Rep. Ahmed Touizi, the Chairperson of the Group of Authenticity and Modernity, Rep. Mustapha Reddad (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Omar Hejira (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism), Rep. Khaddouj Slassi (Socialist Group), Cllr. Kamal Ait Mik (Group of the National Rally of Independents) and Cllr. Hassan Chamis (Group of Authenticity and Modernity).

This international gathering is an opportunity for the representatives of the Member Parliaments to meet and discuss to open wide horizons for dialogue that would reinforce parliamentary efforts under the theme of the General Discussion of this Session: Promoting peaceful coexistence and inclusive societies: Fighting intolerance.

The agenda of the 146th IPU's Assembly includes the election of the Chair of the Session, the examination of the requests to include some urgent provisions proposed by the participating parliamentary representation, and the discussion of several vital questions through the standing and ad hoc committees. The delegation of the Representation of the House of Representatives will take part in the meetings of the standing committee of the IPU: Committee on Peace and International Security, Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade, Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, and the Committee on United Nations Affairs. They will also participate in the proceedings of the general assembly and Governing Council.

In this regard, the Committee on Peace and International Security will discuss its draft resolution on Cyberattacks and cybercrimes: The new risks to global security," which will be adopted during the General Assembly. On the same occasion, the Committee on Sustainable Development will adopt a draft resolution on Parliamentary efforts to achieve negative carbon balances of forests. The Session will also feature the presentation of the reports on the Standing Committees' activities.

Besides, the Moroccan parliamentary delegation will participate in the meetings of the Arab, African, and Islamic geopolitical groups. The meetings will be devoted to examining and exchanging views on the inscription of several items in the agenda of the General Assembly and the Governing Council and agreement on the candidates for the vacant positions in the Standing or ad hoc Committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Moreover, the Secretary General of the House of Representatives, Mr. Najib El Khadi, will preside over the meeting of the Association of Secretaries-General of Parliaments members of the IPU, with the participation of the Secretary General of the House of Councilors, Mr. El Assad Zarouali. The meeting will cover several prominent questions like "Inequality between men and women in the Parliament - what solutions?"; "Parliamentarians and conflict of interest," and the Role of Parliaments in combatting climate change." The meeting will also feature a survey on the best practices for e-Parliaments.

The General Assembly will conclude its proceedings by adopting a final document on this year's general discussion theme.

It should be noted that the Moroccan delegation will hold several talks with the participating delegations on the sidelines of the Session to consolidate bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation.
