Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki received on Tuesday, September 1st, 2020, at the House's headquarters, Canadian Ambassador to Morocco Nell Stewart, in a courtesy visit following her appointment as Canada's new Ambassador to Morocco.
On this occasion, the Ambassador affirmed the importance given by her country to its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco, noting that the two countries share several views. She also highlighted the mutual commitment of both countries to promote women's situation, and their coordination on several timely issues at the international level. Besides, the Canadian Ambassador also noted the presence of several Canadian citizens of Moroccan roots.
Nell Stewart also commended the solidarity of the Kingdom of Morocco with African countries in combatting the coronavirus pandemic by providing medical aid following the high instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. She also praised Morocco's assistance to Lebanon following the explosion that took place lately in its capital Beirut.
Additionally, the Ambassador stated that the Canadian Parliament has recently established a Canada-Morocco parliamentary friendship group gathering representatives of different political parties. In this respect, she stressed the importance of consolidating the cooperation relations between the two countries' legislative institutions.
On his part, Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki lauded the high quality of the cooperation ties linking the two countries and their strategic partnership, praising Canada's wise stand regarding the Kingdom's territorial integrity. He also stressed that the two countries share the same values regarding gender equality, consolidating democracy, and reinforcing institution-building.
In the same respect, Mr. Habib El Malki exposed the development of the constitutional and democratic journey of our country since its independence, in addition to the major reforms launched wisely under the able leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which culminated in the approval of the 2011 Constitution by Moroccans. Besides, the House's Speaker noted that the Kingdom's Constitution has conferred huge prerogatives to the Parliament and reflected the separation of powers. It has also strengthened gender equality and created several bodies of good governance, thus reflecting Moroccans' aspirations to establish a democratic state dominated by the rule of law in harmony with the unique Moroccan identity.
On the parliamentary level, the Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed his strong will to consolidate cooperation ties between the two countries' legislative institutions. He also added that "Parliamentary diplomacy contributes to consolidating relations with friendly States, and Canada is a distinguished partner of the Kingdom of Morocco."
