FOPREL: Moroccan Parliamentary Delegation Holds Talks with Mexican Officials

A Moroccan parliamentary delegation held on Friday, March 11, in Mexico, a series of meetings with parliamentary officials on the sidelines of their participation in the 40th Ordinary Session of the Forum of the Speakers of Legislative Assemblies of Central America and the Caribbean (FOPREL). The talks discussed the consolidation of parliamentary cooperation and other questions of mutual interest.

The Deputy-Speakers of the Houses of Councilors and Representatives, Ahmed Akhchichine and Hassan Benomar, held a meeting, attended by the Moroccan Ambassador to Mexico, Abdelfattah Lebbar, with the new President of FOPREL and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, Ernesto Alfredo Castro Aldana. The meeting focused on the consolidation of cooperation between the Moroccan Parliament and this regional forum.

On this occasion, Mr. Ahmed Akhchichine lauded the level of cooperation between the Moroccan Parliament and the Parliaments of the FOPREL Member States, which has witnessed a special dynamic lately. He also confirmed that this cooperation reflects the strategic choice of the Kingdom of Morocco in promoting South-South cooperation.

For his part, Mr. Benomar called for reinforcing the dynamic marking the parliamentary ties linking the Kingdom of Morocco to Latin American countries through elaborating measures and initiatives that take advantage of the important common aptitudes, in particular the strategic location of the Kingdom of Morocco and its role as a link between Africa and the region.

In the same vein, the new President of FOPREL expressed his strong will to consolidate and diversify ties with the Kingdom of Morocco through establishing concrete projects in various areas of mutual interest.

He also noted that the participation of the Moroccan delegation has enabled the members of the FOPREL Parliaments to acquire knowledge on the Moroccan experience in the themes inscribed in the Session's agenda, especially concerning migration and combating climate change.

The Moroccan delegation also met with the Chairperson of the Foreign Relations Committee at the Mexican Senate, Mr. Héctor Vasconcelos, who affirmed his country's will to exchange expertise in the areas of migration management, renewable energies and legalization of cannabis.

The Mexican official also stressed the importance of intensifying meetings to reflect the common will, and to strengthen bilateral cooperation through concrete projects that would bring profit to both sides.

Besides, the two parties underlined that the Kingdom of Morocco and Mexico can coordinate their positions regarding mutual questions in the international organizations and fora, in order to find solutions to international issues and face the major common challenges.

It should be noted that the Kingdom of Morocco joined FOPREL in 2014 as a Permanent Observer. The Forum comprises the Speakers of the legislative assemblies of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
