The Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments Concludes Its Works with Participation of Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki

The Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, which took place under the overall theme of “Mobilizing Parliaments for a more Effective Multilateralism that Ensures Peace and Sustainable Development for Peoples and the World,” concluded its works on Thursday, August 20th, 2020. The various panels pursued the discussions on topics related to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, climate issues, human mobility around the world, improving governance by bridging the gap between parliaments and the people, forging inclusive and sustainable economies, and countering terrorism and extremism.

In his participation in the panel discussion on human mobility, Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki stressed Morocco’s proactivity in the settlement of the situation of migrants on its territory since 2014, especially those coming from the brotherly African countries. He also highlighted the necessity to adopt an inclusive approach for this category on the horizon of engaging it in host countries' development process instead of considering it a burden on these societies.

The Conference works culminated in the adoption of a declaration in which the participating speakers of parliaments stressed the importance of multilateral management of international crises and sustainable development through respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. The latter theme was a fundamental axis in the Conference works, especially considering the dominance of many phenomena such as technological developments and the rise of violence. This has shown the role that parliaments must play in this regard as they are key actors in the success of the multilateral strategy for crisis management by bringing together the people’s different views.
