The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Hassan Benomar, took part in the 41st Ordinary Session of the Forum of the Chairpersons of the Legislative Assemblies of Central America, Caribbean and Mexico (FOPREL), held on March 10, 2023, in the Republic of El Salvador.
The Session featured the transmission of the rotating presidency of FOPREL for 2023-2024 from the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador to the House of Representatives of the Dominican Republic in the person of its Speaker, Hon. Alfredo Pacheco Osorio. The participants in the Session discussed several questions relating to parliamentary cooperation in Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.
In his intervention during the Session, Rep. Hassan Benomar stressed the importance of solidifying South-South parliamentary cooperation, noting the orientation of the Moroccan foreign policy, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, towards supporting cooperation between Southern countries in order to achieve the development aspired by their peoples.
Rep. Hassan Benomar also underscored the keenness of the House of Representatives to consolidate cooperation and communication with the legislative institutions of Central America and the Caribbean by participating actively in the various fora that discuss the concerns of the region’s peoples.
On the sidelines of the Session, the Deputy Speaker of the House held talks with several Speakers of the region's Parliaments. The discussions covered the value of advancing the bilateral parliamentary dialogue and activating parliamentary friendship groups in the reinforcement of relations between parliaments.
It should be noted that the FOPREL includes ten Member States: Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, and has its Seat in Managua, Nicaragua.
