Clerk of the House of Representatives Takes Part in the Eighth IRENA Legislators Forum and 13th IRENA Assembly

The Clerk of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tarik Kadiri, took part in the Eighth Legislators Forum of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the 13th Assembly of the Agency, which took place on January 13-15, 2023, in Abu Dhabi.

The event is part of the “2023 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week," which features several activities that involve heads of State and Governments, ministers of energy and environment, parliamentarians, and businesspeople. The event aims to accelerate the rate of sustainable development, elaborate plans to achieve energy transition in world countries, combat climate change, preserve the environment, exchange experiences and expertise, highlight innovations, and elaborate joint strategies for climate action.

In his statement during the IRENA Legislators Forum, Rep. Tarik Kadiri highlighted the distinguished position the Kingdom of Morocco enjoys at the global level in the area of energy transition and usage of renewable and clean energies. In the same respect, he noted that such a position is the fruit of a national vision and strategic orientations the Kingdom has been implementing under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah glorify him.

On the same occasion, the Clerk of the House noted that besides its leadership in producing solar and wind energy via the largest solar and wind energy plants in the world, the Kingdom of Morocco has also become the first African and Arab country to propose a roadmap for the production of green hydrogen, given that it is positioned among the seven best countries that have the potential and infrastructure required for succeeding in this area.

As for the bilateral and multilateral parliamentary level, Rep. Kadiri proposed several recommendations that mainly covered the institutionalization of international parliamentary cooperation on the acceleration of energy transition by creating an international parliamentary forum on the matter. The Representative also proposed the formation of specialized standing committees within the regional, continental, and international parliamentary organizations to encourage parliamentarians to enact national laws that would serve as a legal framework for government action toward achieving energy transition. Besides, the Clerk of the House noted the importance of consolidating bilateral parliamentary ties between the standing committees concerned with the energy sector within the legislative institutions of all world countries.

The 2023 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week will pursue its activities until January 21, with the expected participation of the Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, and the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Ms. Leila Benali.
