Chairperson of Foreign Affairs Committee Receives Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs, and Moroccan Expatriates Committee at the House of Representatives, Rep. Nadia Bouaida, held talks on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the seat of the House, with Sen. Ria Oomen-Ruijten, the Rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, currently on a working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco.

The talks between the two parties covered the new report the PACE is elaborating on the Partnership for Democracy, a status the Moroccan Parliament has had since 2011.

On this occasion, Rep. Nadia Bouaida commended the ties linking the Moroccan Parliament and the PACE. In the same respect, she highlighted the main reforms the Kingdom has launched in several areas, especially in terms of consolidating democracy, promoting human rights, and guaranteeing freedom of speech.

As for the new report of the PACE, the Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee stressed the importance of opening dialogue channels on this matter and enlarging their scope, especially with the members of joint committees between the Moroccan and European Parliaments. Rep. Bouaida also gave a brief overview of the missions and competencies of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives.

For her part, the PACE’s Rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy lauded the distinguished position the Moroccan Parliament had earned thanks to the dynamism reflected by the Moroccan delegation, either during the convention of the plenary sittings, committee meetings, or through their initiatives.

Sen. Ria Oomen-Ruijten added that her visit to the Kingdom of Morocco aims to evaluate the status of Partner For Democracy the Moroccan Parliament enjoys and to identify the progress of this partnership since the elaboration of three evaluation reports for 2013, 2015, and 2019.

It should be noted that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe granted the Moroccan Parliament the status of Partner for Democracy in 2011.
