Abu Dhabi: Delegation of the House of Representatives Takes Part in 2024 Parliamentary Conference on the WTO under the 13th Ministerial Conference of the Organization

A delegation of the House of Representatives took part in the proceedings of the 2024 Parliamentary Conference on the World Trade Organization, held on the sidelines of the 13th Ministerial Conference of the Organization in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center on February 25, 2024.

The delegation comprised Rep. Alae-Eddine Bahraoui (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Abdelfattah El Aouni (Group of Authenticity and Modernity), Rep. Mimoune Amiri (Istiqlali Group of Union and Egalitarianism), and Rep. Abdennour Hasnaoui (Socialist Group – Ittihadi Opposition).

The proceedings of the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO covered the means for creating and reinforcing a multilateral trade system that serves everyone. The Conference also tackled the link between trade and climate change, as well as digital trade in the era of flexible economies.

Held annually on the sidelines of the WTO Ministerial Conference, the Conference enables the parliamentarians specialized in international trade, finance, and economic development to monitor the progress achieved in the resolutions of ministerial conferences, interact with Government negotiators and WTO officials, exchange views and experiences with legislators from other parliaments, and determine the means of parliamentary action at the national and international levels.

It should be noted that the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO, created in 2002 upon a joint initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the European Parliament, is a parliamentary control mechanism over the WTO. It aims to impart a parliamentary dimension to this international governmental body to contribute to reinforcing transparency and accountability in the global trade system.
