Moroccan Parliament Commemorates Its 60th Anniversary

Under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah glorify him, and as part of commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco, the two Houses of Parliament, the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors, will host a photo and document exhibition, as well as a national seminar, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the Seat of the Parliament in Rabat.

Organized in partnership with Archives du Maroc, the photo and document exhibition will showcase pivotal moments of parliamentary action that has  accompanied the institutional, democratic, and social development in our country since its start. The exhibition will trace the evolution of parliamentary action since the creation of the National Consultative Council in 1956 as the first nucleus of the Moroccan Parliament at the initiative of the late His Majesty King Mohammed V, followed by the adoption of the first Constitution of the Kingdom and the organization of elections that resulted in a bicameral Parliament formed of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors in 1963 under the reign of the late His Majesty King Hassan II, and finally the profound reforms and global and multifaceted development led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah glorify him.

The participants in the national seminar will debate two major themes: "The constitutional evolution of the Parliament’s structure and functions," and "The levers, challenges, and prospects of parliamentary action." During the first sitting, researchers and experts will tackle Morocco’s bicameral parliamentary system, the link between the Legislative and the Executive, and the evaluation of public policies. The second sitting will cover the connection between the Parliament and democratic practice, the open Parliament, and the challenges related to parliamentary action.

Besides, the seminar will feature a tribute to the former Representatives Badia Skalli and Latifa Bennani-Smires as the first women to be elected members of the Moroccan Parliament in the 1990s.
