Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Mohammed Ghayate, is taking part in the Second Session of the Conference of Speakers of African Legislative Assemblies, held on October 25-28, 2024, in Accra, the Republic of Ghana.
The Session falls within the scope of pursuing the founding steps of the Conference of Speakers through a rich order of business that includes five intensive work sittings. The sittings include the examination, adoption, and signature of the Constitution of the Conference (Rules of Procedure); the election of its bodies; the discussion of financial affairs and the designation of a financial controller; as well as the swearing-in of the members of the Executive Committee and the Consultative Group.
On another note, the participants will also tackle the future orientations of this African body, and the measures aimed at enhancing its importance and establishing relations with other regional and international parliamentary organizations, in addition to the prospects of integrating the bodies of the African Union and discussing the proposals of the Third General Assembly.
It should be noted that the Conference of Speakers of African Legislative Assemblies was established in 2020. The Nigerian capital, Abuja, hosts the Seat of this body that gathers the leaders of African parliaments with a view to cooperating and addressing the common challenges and hurdles. Besides, the Conference serves as a platform for seeking collective solutions to reinforce the role of parliaments in promoting and advancing development programs in Africa.
