Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki held talks, Thursday, March 12th at the House’s headquarters, with Ambassador of Algeria to Morocco Abdelhamid Abdaoui, currently on a courtesy visit following his recent appointment as Algeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom.
On this occasion, the Speaker of the House of Representatives affirmed that the elements uniting Morocco and Algeria are far greater than the ones dividing them. In this respect, he said that “the factors of unity between the two countries are very strong and varied.” He also referred to the shared history, memory, language, religion, culture, geography, and other elements. Mr. El Malki also stressed that the globalization marking today’s world imposes solidarity and agglomeration of countries within regional groups. Besides, he highlighted the aspirations of the region’s peoples to build a Maghreb Union and to consolidate cooperation and solidarity ties between its countries.
Additionally, the House’s Speaker noted the strength of brotherhood ties linking the Moroccan and Algerian peoples, highlighting the importance of parliamentary and political dialogue between the two countries and the imperative of focusing on the future. In the same respect, he added that “Time has become very pressing, and we must bring our efforts together to face the common challenges.” Mr. El Malki also noted that parliamentary diplomacy might open new horizons of cooperation and bring closer the views of the two countries on the different questions of common interest. In the same context, he called for intensifying the visits between the parliamentary friendship groups and officials of both countries Parliaments.
For his part, Algerian Ambassador to Morocco affirmed the importance of dialogue between the two countries, especially on the parliamentary level, to consolidate the elements shared by the two countries and bring their views closer. In this respect, he said that “there is complementarity between the two countries in economy, and there are many elements that we share. Also, dialogue between the two countries is crucial, and we should work together to build greater Maghreb.”
Mr. Abdaoui recalled the participation of Algerian parliamentary delegations in the various regional and international events hosted by the Moroccan Parliament. He also shed light on the role of Parliaments in consolidating understanding and cooperation between the two countries.
